Geisha were actually encouraged to have children. If they had daughters, then that girl would be automaticly raised to become a part of the flower and willow world.
Akane's issue with the pregnancy would be that the father wasn't her danna or a customer, but instead a poor man who didn't bring any money to her okiya.
Also, in order for her to just quit her job, she would have to have gone jimae (independant) already. If she still had debts to her okiya, then she could only retire to marry if her husband could pay off the debts in one go.

I really hate threadjacking, but wouldn't it be better to make this information accessible in the actual forum, before someone goes and spends the time required to type up a history they're not going to end up using? I'm willing to bet that most of the site's potential members have not read Liza Dalby's books, or are acquainted with the nuances of geisha life beyond what the media (or a short trip to Wikipedia) projects.

I guess I wasn't as clear in my profile. I'd mentioned they were poor for a reasons, hence Toshiro's want to get a good job to support his family. Toshiro's mother Akane had the issue you'd mentioned about the danna, though I doubt she'd had a danna at the time but i'd imagine that a random child would be looked down upon in the geisha world. Anywho, do I have the part boss or not? ;D And, on a random note, I agree with minamoto-san on the information. A little culture index or something would go a long way.

Well, if she had a danna at the time and became pregant with another man's baby, that would be looked down on. But any baby was welcome, really. Though the boys ended up getting completely spoiled a lot of the time. A girl baby meant the okiya didn't have to buy her from her parents.
So if the mother was jimae with a danna, then your background still works perfectly. Not that it's all that important to the story of the son.
I haven't been made a moderator yet, so it's up to Masako or Alexis to approve your profile. Seems fine to me.

approved as long as you are playing one of the many who service the geisha district, or are a customer. role play in the park, cafe, etc is alwways fun too, young maiko are forever flirting around with those who service them in one way or another.

Don't worry, masako. It says right in his profile that he's playing a customer.
So, I guess we'll have to start an ozashiki thread so your character has a chance to play.
